Too Far?

Today I read an article that made me shutter at how ridiculous people can be. Especially people involved in PETA. This article may have been a publicity stunt, if it was it worked, it was all over the web including a NYC news station http://www.wnbc.com/news/17539627/detail.html. In a nutshell, it suggests that ice cream maker Ben and Jerry’s use human breast milk instead of traditional cow milk. Since you’re reading my post and probably care at least a little about what I have to say, I think I’ll make a short list about why I think this is incredibly dumb.

  1. Ben and Jerry’s is already making more effort than most of the other guys to make sure their cows aren’t given hormones. Give them a break and go after someone else.
  2. According to the article cows are being punished by being milked. Anyone care to tell me how the all the ladies being milked are going to feel about being milked.
  3. If its so bad for cows to be milked how is it going to be better for people? Does PETA really care more about cows than their own species?
  4. Cows udders hold a bit of milk. Just given the size ratio alone, they are going to have to line up a lot of willing ladies to replace cow milk with breast milk.
  5. Seriously, who in the world has the stomach to eat a pint of Ben and Jerry’s newest flavors?  Gag me.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for treating animals humanely (then having them for dinner). I just think that some people get so carried away with it that they stop using common sense.

As a regrettable side note, I did sign a PETA petition once for something at warped tour because they were giving away free dvd’s. Yes, I fell for the scam and scored what turned out to be a crappy dvd which lacked music, then entire selling point, and pushed their radical agenda.

I can’t remember exactly where I learned this but, I’m pretty sure that NOT milking a cow is worse than milking it. I was doing a little bit of digging to find an article about that but I gave up after reading more than I care to about dairy farming.

The point remains however, I’m pretty sure that not milking the cow is a less human option than milking it. Just me though.

And yes I would be very interested to meet some ladies who have agreed to be milked for Ben and Jerry’s. I wonder if they have the same huge rotating turnstile for humans that cows go through to be milked each day.
